I want to be a Candle

This January I am joining the Just Jot it January challenge. It means I need to write something everyday during January – even if it is a shopping list or a photo.

I was thinking this morning about candles. The candle that sparked these thoughts was not glamorous. It was a citronella candle that I light when I have my quiet time with God out in the garden under the gazebo. For some reason, that particular spot in the garden encourages day mosquitos. They have striped bodies and they are smaller than the night mosquitos but they pack an itchy punch just as annoying. Hence the candle.

As I watched I saw the wax melt and eventually become less. Essentially the candle gives of itself to serve others.

I want to be like a candle this 2021. I want to bring light to others, to the world. A candle doesn’t have to be beautiful, or decorated for Christmas. Any candle can give light.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world…. let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14a, 16 NIV)

No speech is required. No grand gestures. All I have to do is to be who God created me to be. If my time and energy are consumed by giving light to others, then that is part of God’s great plan for me.

My Prayer.

Father God, this year I dedicate myself to You anew. Please use me to light dark places wherever you choose. Amen.
