Day by Day

“Day by day, day by day,
O, dear Lord, three things I pray:
to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly,
follow thee more nearly, day by day” (attributed to Saint Richard of Chichester.)

I love these words. They are meaningful and easy to remember. I’ve often used them as a personal prayer.

However, I’d like to adapt this prayer to make it more personal to me. Not nearly as poetic and missing the assonance that makes it so memorable, but here it is.

Day by day, dear Lord, I ask four things of You. I want to know You more intimately, love You more passionately, trust You more implicitly and be transformed every day more into Your likeness. Amen.

“Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits and blessings, which thou hast given to me, for all the pains and insults which thou hast borne for me. O most merciful Friend, Brother and Redeemer; may I know thee more clearly, love thee for dearly, and follow thee more nearly.” (Part of a prayer by Saint Richard of Chichester, who died in 1255)
