FFfAW Challenge – Week of 05-24-2016

Charles fumed in the church. Amanda had thrown him out. He had nowhere else to go. If only she was more forgiving – after all, it was just a one night stand – this time.

He looked up at the ceiling. He felt his pulse slow down in awe. Was that heaven? Was that God on the throne? Maybe God could help. Maybe He could change Amanda. He was supposed to be a God of love after all.

Scenes from his own life flashed before him.  Hot tears filled his eyes. “O God, I really love her,” he whispered, “Please change me,” (100 words)

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “I Pledge Allegiance.”

I grew up in the era of hymns and I am still moved and inspired by the old words.  One of my favourites and possibly the most challenging is “I Vow to You, my Saviour.”

It was written by Richard T Bewes after “I vow to Thee my Country” by Celcil Spring-Rice to the music from Thaxted (1921) from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity  from The Planets (Op32) (1914-1916) by Gustav Holt

I am not often in a position where I can pray it honestly and sincerely. My dedication to my Lord fluctuates as I keep trying to take back control of my life which I have surrendered to Him. However, today’s prompt has reminded me where my allegiance must be.

I vow to you, my Saviour, all earthly things above,

Entire, and whole and perfect, the service of my love.

The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test,

That lays upon the alter the dearest and the best.

The love that never falters, the love that knows the price,

The love that stands indebted before your sacrifice………..

….So light the fire withing me, and let me fan the flame

and fill me with the Spirit, that I may bear your Name.

In season and in hardship, to run my given race.

O keep me ever-burning until I see your face.

I vow to you my Saviour, that where your feet have trod,

I’ll serve and always follow my Master and my God.

Grey Hair

The Day said,

“It is now 6pm, My life is nearly over. My best hours are gone and my energy fades. My light is feeble. No longer can I power a photocell. No longer can I heat water. I am no longer of any use. Nobody can read by my light. I am old and tired and useless to God and Man. My past has polluted my air – the dust of the hours gone. There are clouds too – memories of the tears I have cried.

And God said,

“You are the day that I have made. People rejoice and are glad in you. Did you give light in the womb before the dawn of your birth? Stop feeling sorry for yourself!  You are entering a new stage of your life. It is part of My plan. The dust and the clouds which are causing you pain will demonstrate My glory. Now is the time when families gather together for a meal and share love. Now is the time for romantic walks, for cozy fires, for cappuccinos. Soon it will be time for rest.

You are eternal. You will always exist. The things that happened in your life -in the dark hours as well as in the light ones – will be forever in history and cannot be undone.

Meanwhile, enjoy the stage you are at. It is called Sunset!

Listen to me,…..You whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. Even to your old age and grey hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. (Is46:4 NIV)

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life. (Prov 16:31 NLT)

Prayer   Father, forgive me when I feel sorry for myself because I can no longer do the things I used to be able to. Please help me to trust you in this stage of life, to show your glory and to share your love. Amen.
